In the first year of Yoro (717), it is said that Taicho Daishi enshrined the Thousand-Hand Kannon in a cave, marking the beginning of this famous Shingon temple.
It was rebuilt during the Edo period by the third lord of the Kaga domain, Maeda Toshitsune, and it is said that Basho, who later visited Komatsu, paid a visit to Natadera.
He left behind the famous phrase, "Whiter than the stones of Ishiyama, the autumn wind."

Typically, the best time to see the autumn leaves is from early to late November.
